I've put up some samples of handgame/stickgame songs at the Honey Lake Maidu web site, www.honeylakemaidu.org/handgame.htmlAt the bottom of the page are several sample song snippets, and if you play several at once it starts to sound like a big time stickgame tournament. The sound quality is not that great but you can get the gist of the songs. I'll be adding more when I find time to digitize some of my old recordings. You might actually read some of what I have to say about handgame there, and give me some feedback.

speaking of handgame songs...was just thinking the other day of the best singers out in stickgame country......i know that most people will say singers close to where they play at but is just curious myself as to who people think are good singers....there is couple of people i know who can really get a game goin by making the players on their side dance and the hiders take sticks when they sing....one is tinyman heavy runner that old guy can still sing with all the younger guys today and he can sing all weekend long....he;s been one of the best singers for as long as i can remember....another is clint houtrz....when he use to play he would come up with some of the nicest songs i ever heard...hell i still have some of his recordings....well anyways is just curious to what otherpeople think......have a good and safe summer htis year as all you powwow people hit the road

It is very cool to see you all talking about songs. In the old days we could hear from a distance who was pointing a game, because no one would sing your songs except you and your immediate and extended family. Some of the best singers from my youth were the Moses Sisters from Wellpinit, Louie K. from Flathead, and you could definitely hear them from all over the pow wow grounds when they sang. It was a beautiful thing. Thanks for reading my words. Safe travels to you all this summer.

Eric you are so right with the people you have named but thats only the ones from Nevada and California what about Utah and Idaho. You should have heard the songs that some of those guys that are gone now use to sing. Them songs will never be song like that agian in our life time. I'm blessed to have some of them on tape and can play them when i'm drivin down the road on my way to the next stickgame or to town.. Someday maybe all sell some of them just so younger people can hear them too, and pick up the songs. Its hard to keep track of over 200 handgame tapes and all those songs. Oh well next time all post the best singers i ever heard in my life time...Taz

well i believe we are created equal and the time we spend at stickgame we all have our favorite singers but what about the canadians they have some pretty strong singers right now it's all american .......lol also i thought we were taught that we as native people are supposed to be humble....instead we here are arguing who is the best singer we all lose and we all win at stickgame no matter who's songs are sung and who is singing them whether they are family songs the way i was told about once a song is sung it belongs to the people in general it is a gift from the spirit world whether we "think" we composed it or not thnak you....see on the stickgame trail

This is a good website. . . If i were to pin point some good singers from canada i'd have to say: Dean Cardinal Shane Sparklingeyes Albert Berland and family Donovan Waskahat Annette Flyingabout Geraldine Chief Zane wade Levi Makokis Kadeem Crosschild Cameron Pipe Tara Northpeigan and Family Mike Waskahat.
I might have forgot some people but all in all once you get into the game and the songs then anyone can be a good singer. . . It takes a very skilled player to win back to back to back, i'd also like to say that the Washington Corral family are very terrific singers along with my good friend Gilbert Onepennee. I hope to start playing and singing again really soon, i am currently taking a break from handgames until my good friend Albert Berland is done attenting unniversity. So with that i'd like to say keep the voice strong the drums in tune and your thumb clean and see you around the round dance/powwow trail, hoka!
